Located at the southernmost tip of the Rio Grande Valley, 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and one block from the U.S. - Mexico border, The University of Texas at Brownsville is the newest of 15 component institutions operated by The University of Texas System. Established in 1991, UTB has formed a unique partnership with Texas Southmost College (TSC), a comprehensive community college. The partnership provides continuity in curriculum, efficient use of resources, and high quality instructional programs at the associate, undergraduate and masters levels. UTB and TSC serve 8000 students drawn from the rich bilingual and bicultural community it serves. Together with the Mexican metropolitan areas along the U.S.-Mexico border, Brownsville and Matamoros form a hub of population, commerce, industry and culture which will play a major role in the impending development of the Texas-Mexico border area. UTB and TSC expect to grow rapidly during the coming decade to meet the needs of this dynamic region.
