Texas A&M University opened in 1876 as the state's first public higher education and land-grant institution and today is one of the few universities also to hold sea-grant and space-grant designations. Texas A&M is the nation's third-largest university with about 48,700 students. Texas A&M has participated in more than 500 research projects in 76 countries; instructs more than 4,384 international students from about 125 countries; has formal research and exchange agreements with about 135 institutions in about 45 countries; has more than 1,900 students participating in University-developed study abroad programs each year, ranking the University among the top 15 research institutions nationally; ranks fourth nationally in new National Merit Scholars; and consistently ranks in the top ten nationally in research expenditures. The University has a Study Abroad Center in Italy and a University Center in Mexico City equipped with telecommunications capabilities. International research efforts at Texas A&M include the $45 million a year Ocean Drilling Program funded by 15 nations, the Institute for Nautical Archeology and the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, a federally funded center for the Study of the Western Hemispheric Trade and the Center for International Business Research and Studies, the Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center funded by the United Nations and others.
