Evaluation of NAEP III, ATP III & Formulation of NATEP

Project Description:
TIEC provided an Agricultural Economist for one year to serve as team leader for the evaluation of two agricultural extension projects [NAEP III and ATP III] and the design of a new extension project [NATEP] for the Ministry of Agriculture in Indonesia. TIEC served as sub-contractor to the Indonesian client organization [PPA].

Development of a U.S.-Indonesian Distance Education Program

Project Description:
TIEC implemented a two-phased program for Indonesian and U.S. educators. The first phase brought ten English Language and Educational Technology administrators from Indonesia to the U.S. to participate in a multi-regional study tour in November 1992. The second phase was conducted in Indonesia with faculty from Texas universities providing hands-on experience for Indonesians to develop their capability to design, implement, manage, monitor, and evaluate instructional courses that incorporate distance education between the U.S. and Indonesia.

  Japan:

Summer High School English/Culture Program

Client: Oita Prefecture, Japan

Project Description:
This two-week summer program provided students and accompanying teachers with English language instruction, cultural and social activities, and field trips. Endorsed by the Governor of the Prefecture, the Honorable Morihiko Hiramatsu, the program brought more than 600 students and teachers to Texas.

 

Japanese English Teacher Training Program

Project Description:
This program brought Japanese secondary school ESL teachers to Texas to gain a deeper understanding of American culture and life, and to gain experience in American public education, particularly American ESL methodologies and practices. The goal of the program was to strengthen English curricula and to improve the quality of teaching about the United States in secondary schools in Japan. Participants attended methodology courses, audited a university course, observed and gave cultural presentations to local secondary schools, and attended a seminar on Gender, Ethnicity and Race. From 1989 to 1995 the program was five weeks in length, with 20-24 participants per year. In 1996 the program was expanded to four months, with 8-10 participants per year.

 

English Language and Culture Program

Client: Nihon University - Mishima Senior High School

Project Description:
This annual English language and culture program has been conducted in Austin, Texas, during the spring and the summer for students from Nihon University-Mishima Senior High School, Mishima, Japan. For the summer programs, the students are grouped into two cohorts, one cohort attending TIEC’s Texas Intensive English Program (TIEP) in Austin, Texas, and the other cohort attending the English Language Institute (ELI) at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The spring program is conducted in Austin at TIEP. Both the three-week summer and the two-week spring language and culture programs provide students and accompanying teachers with English language instruction, cultural and social activities, field trips, and a weekend homestay experience.

  Korea:

Fulbright American Studies Institute for Korean Secondary School Teachers of English

Project Description:
Now in its third year of operation, this program sends Korean secondary school teachers to Texas to gain a deeper understanding of American culture and life, and to gain experience in American public education, particularly American ESL methodologies and practices. The goal of the program is to strengthen English curricula and to improve the quality of teaching about the United States in secondary schools in Korea. The seven-week program consists of three phases: Phase I - four-week Academic Residency in Austin, including orientation to American culture; ESL teaching techniques, theory, and materials; and preparation for the Secondary School Site Residency; Phase II - two-week Secondary School Site Residency in a Texas school district outside of Austin; and Phase III - one-week Academic Residency in Austin for participants to reflect upon their stay in the United States and plan how they will integrate their newly acquired knowledge and skills into their teaching situations in Korea and share their knowledge and skills with other Korean teachers.

 

Business English and New Official Development Program

Client: Ministry of Home Affairs

Project Description:
The Texas Intensive English Program (TIEP), a wholly owned subsidiary of TIEC,  provided intensive English language training with an emphasis on English in business settings, one-week internships in local government offices, and social and cultural activities for 11 employees of the Korean Ministry of Home Affairs. Participants lived with American families during the 12-week program.

Malaysia:

Two-Year Twinning Program

Client: Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM), Shah Alam, Malaysia

Start: 1985  End: 1988

Funding Agency: Government of Malaysia

Project Description:
TIEC operated a comprehensive, American-style branch campus for the first two years of university study for the Government of Malaysia. TIEC provided instructors, curricula, teaching materials, and equipment for the program in Malaysia which served 1500 students. TIEC also assisted the placement of 1100 of those students in universities in the U.S. More than 225 faculty from the U.S. conducted courses in Malaysia.
