Mission Statement
The Texas Intensive English Program (TIEP), established in 1965, provides English language training and cultural information to individuals whose native language is not English.
TIEP is a nonprofit educational organization and is a division of the Texas International Education Consortium (TIEC), an Association of 32 Texas Public Universities for International Education. TIEC's activities are governed by the presidents of its affiliated universities who serve as the Board of Directors.
The goals of TIEP include:
- improving the English language and study skills of international students in preparation for study at an American college or university, or for the use of English in social and professional situations;
- familiarizing international students with the people, culture, and customs of the United States to facilitate the transition from their countries and adjustment during their stay in the United States;
- facilitating intercultural awareness and understanding among students in TIEP classes;
- providing student support and administrative services of the highest quality in an efficient manner;
- serving as an English language proficiency testing center;
- attracting and developing a credentialed faculty with demonstrated high standards of professional conduct, abilities, and experience in teaching English as a Second Language;
- encouraging active faculty participation in the development and evaluation of the program;
- fostering an intellectual atmosphere in which professional development is valued and pursued by all faculty;
- serving as a resource for the Texas International Education Consortium on projects that involve language and cultural instruction, including training of international teachers of English;
- establishing a presence for the program through the participation of the faculty and professional staff in relevant local, state, national, and international professional associations and activities.
TIEP’s instruction, services, and practices are in compliance with the Standards of the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), the Standards of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), the Guidelines of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP), and the Code of Ethics of NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
