English for Communication & Culture: Overview
The English for Communication Skills program is designed for individuals with intermediate to advanced proficiency who want to improve their English for general or professional purposes. All levels emphasize speaking and listening but also practice reading and writing as appropriate in social and professional settings.
- Listening - Communicative activities, videos, guest speakers, films, discussions
- Speaking - General and cultural discussions and dialogues, prepared and impromptu presentations, pronunciation
- Reading/Vocabulary - Varied topics of general and cultural interest, vocabulary and idioms
- Writing - Personal correspondence, creative writing, journals, compositions, word processing
- Grammar - Systematic approach with emphasis on communication
- Projects - Community-based research and reports, class newspapers or booklets, video projects
- Field Trips - three to five cultural field trips
- Homework - two to four hours per day
Intermediate Level
Level 138 - An intermediate course with an emphasis on integrative English language skill development. Includes a variety of communicative activities, discussions, dialogs, idioms, videos, guest speakers, and field trips as well as somewhat simplified reading materials and writing tasks.
Advanced Levels
Levels 148 & 158 - Advanced levels which review selected complex grammar structures. The courses include a variety of communicative activities, discussions, dialogs, idioms, videos, guest speakers, and field trips as well as authentic reading materials and writing tasks at the advanced levels. Level 158 may be taken more than once since the topics vary from semester to semester.
