Foundations of English: Overview
The Foundations of English program is designed for students with beginning to low-intermediate English proficiency as determined by the TIEP Placement Exam.
- Focus - Basic English skills
- Listening - Everyday and general topics through simplified audio and video materials
- Speaking - Conversations, discussions, dialogues, short presentations, pronunciation
- Reading/Vocabulary - Everyday and general topics, vocabulary, idioms, and reading skills, through simplified materials
- Writing - Basic compositions, journals, paragraph form and organization
- Grammar - Systematic presentation of basic grammar
- Projects - Varied activities such as class newspapers, booklets, videotaped presentations
- Field Trips - two to three educational/cultural field trips
- Homework - two to four hours per day
Level 101 - An introductory course for students with no English proficiency or very limited proficiency. Emphasis on oral-aural skills, grammar, and development of vocabulary for everyday life. Introduction to elementary reading and writing.
Level 110 - An elementary course for students with limited English proficiency. Emphasis on the development of oral-aural skills, grammar, writing, reading, and vocabulary for everyday life.
Level 120 - A transitional beginning-intermediate course which reviews and refines the foundations of English grammar. Emphasis is on application and practice in all four skill areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
