News Alert:Texas International Education Consortium Welcomes 19th Program For Korean Fulbright Scholars to Texas

English Language Teachers From South Korea to Study in Austin and Corsicana

(AUSTIN, TX – Dec. 30, 2019) — The Texas International Education Consortium today welcomes twenty-eight English language teachers from South Korea for the Korean Fulbright Scholars program, a seven-week program sponsored by Fulbright Korea and the Korean-American Educational Commission. This Fulbright program, conducted by TIEC and the Texas Intensive English Program, begins on Dec. 29, 2019 and runs through Feb. 15, 2020, and marks the 19th year TIEC will host this Fulbright program.

The Fulbright Scholars will start the program in Austin with five weeks of professional learning with seminars on American Culture and Teaching Culture, Applied Teaching Techniques and Materials for English as a Second Language, American Public Education, School Site Residency Preparation, Public Speaking, and Cultural Presentations. For the culminating two weeks (Feb. 1 – Feb. 15), the teachers will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in Corsicana, Texas and the Corsicana Independent School District to study American bilingual classrooms at Carroll Elementary School, Corsicana Middle School, and Corsicana High School. In addition, the exchange participants will reside with local families in Corsicana, providing an immersive cultural exchange.

“This is our 19th year hosting the Korean Fulbright Scholars, and the first time the group will take part in residencies based in Corsicana. I wanted to share our wonderful community of Corsicana with our participants,” said Dr. Heather Farmakis, chief learning officer at TIEC/TIEP. “This will be an enriching experience for all involved.”

“This experience will provide an engaging opportunity for both the Fulbright Scholars as well as for our CISD students and teachers to learn about different cultures,” said Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent of Corsicana ISD. “Learning about different cultures of the world is an important part of understanding and preparing for the future.”

The Fulbright program provides international English teachers the opportunity to learn about American society and culture, participate in English teaching method classes, and develop teaching skills to improve students’ English.
