Led by Prof. Nisreen Alwan, a distinguished expert in environmental health and safety, the lecture will provide the audience with an understanding of how sustainable health systems are designed, implemented, and assessed in the modern world. SESSION SPEAKER:

Dr. Nisreen Alwan is a Professor of Environmental Health & Safety at the College of Health Sciences (CoHS) at Abu Dhabi University (ADU), UAE and the Advisory Board Chair at Vision Care Association, Lebanon. She is an expert in the field of food safety, food microbiology, environmental health safety, and freshwater ichthyology. Dr. Alwan received her BSc (2003) and MSc (2005) degrees in Biology from the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon. In 2011, she obtained her PhD degree in Natural Sciences from Goethe University, Germany. Dr. Alwan has served on many administrative roles such as Dean of the School of Health Sciences & Acting Vice Provost at the Modern University for Business and Science (MUBS), Lebanon, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Acting Dean of CoHS at ADU. She is leading collaborations with medical centers, hospitals, and organizations where she is a very active member in many community outreach activities. She has authored over 50 internationally published articles and leads several research projects in collaboration with national and international institutions. She is an Advance HE Senior Fellow and has received several awards such as the Outstanding Research Award, Best Researcher Award, and ADU Service Award.

Dr. Hatem Abushammala is an Associate Professor of Environmental Health and Safety at Abu Dhabi University (ADU). From 2021 till 2025, he has been the Coordinator of the College of Health Sciences at ADU. He obtained his Ph.D. in Environment and Natural Resources in 2015 from the University of Freiburg in Germany. Before joining Abu Dhabi University, Dr. Abushammala was the Wilhelm-Klauditz research fellow at the Fraunhofer Institute (WKI) in Germany. His research work focuses on the conversion of waste (paper, plastic, and agricultural) into high-value materials and energy for a wide range of environmental and technological applications.
