TIEC is fortunate to join global efforts to support women’s empowerment in the United States and around the world. CEO Robin Lerner has been an advocate for women’s economic empowerment and human rights inside government and out, throughout her career. TIEC is working toward membership in the US-Pakistan Women’s Council, a public-private partnership between the U.S. State Department, Texas A&M University and private corporations with the goal of creating an enabling economic environment for women in Pakistan, and joint efforts in the United States and Pakistan.

For TIEC, walking the walk is the key, and this was the theme of last night’s Council celebration, hosted by the City of Houston. Honoring Sultana Siddiqui, Founder of Hum Network, the only media network founded and led by women AND to be on the Pakistan Stock Exchange. Ms. Siddiqui is one of Pakistan’s top 100 business leaders and she got there through an inclusion and empowerment approach. Hum has a policy that no less than 30% of its personnel must be women at all times, which has required a sustained policy, training programs and an enduring vision from the top of the organization.

A lively panel discussion honed in on the importance of mentoring, and of creating opportunity so that girls in every corner of the country have examples to follow. In the words of Sultana Siddiqui, “I was never hindered by lack of a good idea, it was access to leadership.”

TIEC looks forward to sharing opportunities between Texas and Pakistan, and to cooperation with the U.S.-Pakistan Women’s Council.
